You know the drill. I find the smartest, edgiest, and hopefully sexiest people I know who have the characteristics of entrepreneurship to contribute advice to The Chancebending Network. Today we’re talking to Dean Langendorf.

One Question with… Dean Langendorf.

“The future of entertainment is exciting! It’s currently going through massive disruption. The traditional cable companies are losing subscribers and actively looking for ways to attract new customers. The future strength of the cable companies will not come from their hugely bundled channel packages, which customers seem to be rejecting, but from making money from the pipes that deliver the content to people, regardless of what service people use to watch their content. So if a customer watches Netflix, but pays Spectrum or Comcast for their internet service, the cable company still gets a piece of that pie. From the content side, there’s huge opportunity for direct-to-consumer business models that customers can choose to purchase directly, without having to go through their old cable/satellite provider (think HBO Now). This On Demand part of the business is flourishing. Barriers have come down and it’s been a great democratization of content allowing content producers of all sizes to reach customers directly. This has been great for the consumer, but has created a highly fragmented marketplace. How many subscription services are customers really willing to purchase? Probably not many! Now we’re seeing what’s old is new! Customers are now back to being open to watching a few ads here and there if they can get great content for free, which has unleashed a new swarm of companies focused on the AVOD (advertising video on demand) space. I think in the future, customers will reach a certain level of fatigue about the sheer volume of choices and will look for someone to aggregate their entertainment options. You’re already seeing Amazon starting to do that and others following. Generally speaking, people still want a laid back viewing experience that requires little effort. Those who provide value, convenience, and quality will win every time!”
