Do you realize a shocking 52% of people still listen to podcasts through iTunes? Yuck.

As a podcaster and a podcast junkie, I’m always shocked by how many people use Apple Podcasts to listen to podcasts. I suppose it’s the way most people get started, and then build the podcast habit.

Yet there are so many better ways to enjoy podcasts. I personally adore the Overcast player.  It has so many better sophisticated features, and to me, a much simpler interface.

According to this awesome post from podcast app Anchor, interest in podcast listening shows no signs of slowing down. Listenership has grown from 9% of the U.S. population to 26% in past 10 years, increasing by more and more each year.

What I also find interesting is that the “other category” is a staggering 21%. That suggests to me that cars and smart speakers are being used to listen to podcasts, and that means that overall listenership should continue to skyrocket. To all of my voice technology people, this is such a great signal that things are working!

If you have never recorded a podcast, I highly suggest you give it a shot. I started last year at the ripe young age of 42. I immediately fell in love with recording, and it’s now one of my favorite ways to express myself. Everybody should be podcasting. I’m finding new voice and ideas though podcasts everyday now. I think the best content is originating as podcast content and then being turned into text and video. Exciting times!

ps– yes, AirPods look AWFUL, but once you use them you’ll never go back.
